Release: Jessica González-Rojas Wins Primary for Assembly Seat After Mail-in Ballots are Counted

Progressive Challenger Tops Field with over 40% of Total Vote

Jackson Heights, NY - Jessica González-Rojas, Democrat for State Assembly, released the following statement on her primary election victory to represent New York’s 34th Assembly District:

“I am both humbled and thrilled by the trust placed in me by the people of Corona, East Elmhurst, Jackson Heights, and Woodside. This victory is the culmination and sum total of a broad and diverse coalition that set out to build a grassroots campaign on people-powered solutions to the challenges facing our communities.

“While it was important to our campaign that every absentee ballot is counted, I’ve been deeply troubled by the Board of Elections’ inability to afford voters every opportunity to have their voices heard. Our system is clearly flawed and in deep need of reforms.

“In what will likely be the biggest public health crisis of our lifetime, I look forward to getting to work right away on a progressive agenda that protects and lifts up our most vulnerable communities. I am eternally grateful to the thousands of community members, volunteers, and organizations who dedicated their time, money, and energy toward building a better future for all.”

González-Rojas, who showed a commanding lead after the initial in-person election results on June 23rd, maintained her advantage after mail-in ballots were finally tallied. She earned over 40% of the total votes cast in a five-person race to represent parts of Corona, East Elmhurst, Jackson Heights, and Woodside. The results are not yet certified by the City’s Board of Elections.

The 34th Assembly District comprises a population that is approximately 60% Latino, 62% immigrant and over 88% people of color. Jessica González-Rojas is a nationally-recognized expert on health care reform, gender and racial justice.
